It's 7 am and this boring lawn is about to get a phenomenal make over. The
owner has Blue, the extremely large German Shepard, in the house...let the fun
begin!
The guys are working up a sweat digging out the main pond area. Most of our
projects are done by hand and today is no exception. The excavated dirt is
used to form a berm that serves as the base for the waterfalls. Another four
yards of top soil will be brought in and added later on. The two Biofalls® are
positioned near the back of the berm and hooked up to the flexible PVC lines.
The skimmer has been installed and the water level has been set. Planting
pockets provide for the pot-less planting of the water lilies will be added soon
to complete the excavation. But for now the digging continues as the shelves are
carved out.
Things are progressing nicely. The delivery trucks have begun to show up too.
After the pond is dug out, a protective underlayment is laid out before the 45
mil EPDM liner goes down. You can see the fish cave is almost complete. This
underwater tunnel will help keep the fish from becoming a meal to a predator.
The crew continues to "rock in" the walls of the pond. The underwater lights get
set into place at the same time. Decorative gravel will be spread over the liner
and between the boulders.
The main pond is now rocked and graveled. The entire area is rinsed down,
washing the dust and dirt from the rocks. Note the upside down baskets by
Eddie's feet. The're protecting the newly planted water lilies from the blast of
the hose. The dirty water is then pumped out. This helps clear the water much
faster when it's initially filled. Do you see the fish cave...neither will the bad
guys!
The additional four yards of top soil are added and berm is compacted. The
waterfalls and upper pond are carved out and the liner is laid over the top.
The upper pond is being rocked in as the waterfalls are taking shape. It's like
putting together a giant puzzle only with very heavy  pieces, some of them
weighing over 300 lbs. each! This water feature is well on its way.
The Biofalls® are sealed to the liner and hidden from view. Every rock is hand
selected for a perfect fit. I can hear the soft roar of these falls as they're being
built...it won't be long now.
Wait...let me turn this one little rock just a tad to the left...there we go and now
we're done! The Norvich's are on the phone right now as we speak, inviting all
of their friends and family over for a pond warming BBQ. They even insisted
that the extremely talented and hard working Backyard Ponds boys be in
attendance...bottoms up!!
The pumps are fired up and this baby comes alive! The waterfalls are tweaked
to ensure the desired effects are achieved. The edges are checked for low
spots which have potential to leak if the ground settles.
Playful fish are released into the water and are exploring their new home. The
edges of the underlayment and liner are carefully trimmed away. Plants both
terrestrial and aquatic are being planted, over 100 in all!
The final touches are going into this slice of heaven. A fresh layer of mulch is
being added to the beds. It may look done now, but a few small tasks are yet
to be completed. The lights are being wired up to the transformer, the autofill
line needs to be run, hooked up and buried.
