Mechanical and Biological Filtration
In a closed water feature (i.e. non-spring fed) you need
both a mechanical filter to handle debris and a biological
filter to eliminate dangerous toxins and keep the water clear.

Waterfall
Re-circulation of a closed water feature is essential to add
oxygen to the water for fish and beneficial bacteria. In
addition, re-circulating water keeps it fresh and allows gases
to escape.

Rocks and Gravel
Rocks and gravel throughout the bottom provide the perfect
substrate for bacteria to colonize thereby keeping the water
clearer. These important elements are also instrumental in
protecting your liner from harmful ultraviolet rays.
Plants, Fish and Bacteria
Plants remove nutrients from the water for their own nourishment. Fish eat insects and algae, and in turn fertilize the plants.
Bacteria eat the nutrients that feed green water therefore keeping the pond clear.

Eliminating any one of these variables, by attempting to cut corners, will increase maintenance and decrease water clarity.
By establishing a working ecosystem, you work with nature instead of against it. Equally important, the time you spend
maintaining your pond will be reduced to a bare minimum (5-10 minutes a week), while the relaxation time you have to
spend with family and friends will be maximized.

ecosystem
The way to avoid this problem is to create a working ecosystem within the water feature. And
the way to create an ecosystem in a water feature is to combine all of the following elements. If
any of these elements are left out, you will have a more difficult time establishing an ecosystem.
One of the major concerns we hear from prospective pond owners
is that they do not want to invest time and effort into a pond that is
going to turn green and look more like a swamp.
To keep water clear you need a mechanical filter, a biological filter, a waterfall, gravel, plants,
fish, and bacteria. Never use chemicals to kill algae. Chemicals will kill algae, but can also
destroy the ecosystem thus creating a lot more problems in the long run. A well-designed pond
is a balance of filters, plants, fish and bacteria, all working together. We construct all of our
ponds using the complete Aquascape ecosystem.
